MAREE CLARKE- RITUAL. Connection to Country

Last week I visited an indigenous exhibition at Federation Square, Melbourne. I found Maree Clarke’s multimedia installation extremely well thought out and spiritually intriguing.

A sheet hung from the ceiling of the dark room with a projected image of Maree standing in rising smoke. This projected image also reflected through the sheet and onto the back wall. Surrounding the hanging sheet were vertical sticks creating a circle of protection and underneath the sheet a bed of blood orange sand. On the walls of the dark room hung portraits of other Aboriginal people but with only a dull light shone near them to semi-expose each face. The symbolism of the circle stood out to me as well as her use of natural materials to create an earthy atmosphere.
